Metropolitan Hilarion meets with staff of Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate

On October 13, 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, who has been recently appointed as chairman of the editorial board of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate, visited the board and talked to the editorial staff.
Present at the meeting were also Archpriest Vladimir Silovyev, Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate editor-in-chief, Rev. Dimitry Ageyev, assistant to the DECR chairman, and S. V. Chapnin, executive editor of the journal.
Metropolitan Hilarion made the acquaintance of the staff and got to know the duties of each. Then a comprehensive presentation of the journal was shown.
According to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, ‘It is a journal which helps to build the Church’. This January, the journal marked its 80th anniversary. Today it is a leading printed edition of the Russian Orthodox Church which includes a variety of issue headings. Among them are the official church and patriarchal chronicle and speeches and messages of the Patriarch, which form the basis of its editorial policy. It carries articles on such subjects as history of the Church and its international activities, Orthodox education, diocesan life, youth and social work, legal matters as well as popular science articles and theological essays.
For the last two years the subscriptions have grown 2,5 times. The leaders of the journal have set themselves the task to have the circulation increased to 35 thousand copies by 2013.
The meeting also discussed logistic matters, enlargement of the staff and resumption of the English version of the journal. Metropolitan Hilarion was concerned about the criteria of selecting theological material for print, the condition of the archives, the formation of a circle of permanent contributors and other aspects of the journal’s work.
The staff members in their turn asked the chairman of the editorial board numerous questions.
In conclusion of the meeting, Metropolitan Hilarion expressed to the journal staff wishes of God’s help, further success in their efforts to improve the quality of the journal and growth in the number of its subscribers.
