DECR staff member takes part in interreligious round table

On November 29, an international round table “The Role of Religious Leaders in Achieving Sustainable Development in the World” was held online. It was organized by the Nursultan Nazarbayev Center for the Development of Interfaith and Inter-civilization Dialogue and by the Baku International Multiculturalism Center in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Opening the session were Mr. Anuar Khatiev, deputy chairman of the Committee for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Prof. Ayten Gahraman, counselor of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center.
Speaking at the round table were Mr. Firdavs Khalimov, deputy director of the Center for Islamic Civilization under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Mr. Elnar Berikbayev, head of the Strategic Analysis Department of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Archbishop-Metropolitan Tomas Bernard Peta of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Mary in Astana; Mr. Sergey Melnik, senior research associate, Center for Interreligious Dialogue at the Bolgar Islamic Academy; Mr. Nurlan Kairbekov, head of the Department of Religious Expertise of the Spiritual Administration of the Muslims of Kazakhstan; Bishop Rostislav Novgorodov of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan; Ms. Aigerim Temirbayeva, associate professor of the Department of Religious Studies of Nur-Mubarak University of Islamic Culture, and other participants.
Deacon Sergy Nesterov, a staff member of the Secretariat for interreligious relations of the Moscow Patriarchate’ Department for External Church Relations, presented a report, in which he spoke about the challenges and threats that the world community is currently facing and said that religious leaders’ speaking in unified voice and preaching of spiritual and moral values to the broad strata of society could well be factors in overcoming the consequences of the harmful events happening in the world.
