Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America attends commemorative events marking 111th anniversary of Armenian genocide

On 24^th April 2026, Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America attended commemorative events that took place in Buenos Aires, marking the 111^th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, diocesan website reports.

The memorial service and meeting were held in the Armenian Apostolic Church’s Cathedral of St. George the Illuminator. Among those in attendance were clergymen, statespersons and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Attending the ceremony were representatives of various Christian confessions, including Metropolitan Santiago of the Patriarchate of Antioch, Archbishop Chrysostomos of the Syriac Orthodox Church and Priest Carlos of the Roman Catholic Church.

Among those present were Ms Sabrina Ajmechet and Mr Maximiliano Ferraro, Deputies of the National Congress of Argentina; Mr Waldo Wolf, Minister of Security of Buenos Aires; Mr Agustín Caulo and Ms Martina Godoy of the Secretariat for Worship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr Juan Ignacio Torreiro, Director for Worship of the Buenos Aires Province; and other officials.

Taking part in the commemorative events were also representatives of the diplomatic corps, namely, Mr Hovhannes Virabyan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia; Ms Ruzanna Azroyan, Consul of the Republic of Armenia; Mr Stelios Georgiades, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus; Mr Stoyan Mihailov, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria; Mr Efstathios Paizis Paradelis, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic; Mr Bruno Aguirre, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Chile; Mr Adam Ryszka, Chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland; and Mr Ernesto Tulbovic, Minister of the Embassy of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

After the service, a commemorative meeting took place at the memorial to the victims of the Armenian genocide. There, Mr Hovhannes Virabyan, Armenian Ambassador, as well as Mr Pablo Shishmanyan, Chairman of the Armenian Institutions in the Argentine Republic, and Ms Lilia Lemoine, Deputy of the National Congress of Argentina, addressed the audience, emphasizing in their speeches the importance of preserving historical memory and reflecting on the tragedy of the Armenian genocide and the necessity to promote further inter-ethnic and interfaith dialogue.
