Delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church takes part in WCC Central Committee meeting

The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches met in Geneva on June 14-19, 2022. Taking part in the meeting was a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church that included Archimandrite Philaret (Bulekov), vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR); Archpriest Mikhail Gundyaev, representative of the Russian Orthodox Church to the WCC and other international organizations in Geneva; Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations; and Ms Margarita B. Nelyubova and Mr. Philip V. Champion, DECR staff members.
Considered at the meeting was preparation for the 11th WCC Assembly that will take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 31 August to 8 September 2022.
Also, the participants discussed draft documents to be presented at the Assembly, including amendments to Constitution and Rules. Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay was elected the new General Secretary. Statements were adopted on situations of concern, including statements on the imperative for effective response to the climate emergency; on the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia; on the war in Ukraine; on threats to a just peace in Israel and Palestine, and to Christian presence in the Holy Land.
