The Russian Orthodox Church handed over 1,700 tons of humanitarian aid to refugees and affected civilians

Summary of Church assistance to refugees and affected civilians for May 2022

Statistics

● In May, the Synodal Department for Charity raised 3.25 million Rub to help refugees and affected civilians in the conflict zone. In total, by June 10 2022 the Department has collected 219.6 million Rub to help refugees.

● In May, the Synodal Charity Department allocated 42.3 million Rub to help refugees and affected civilians. In total, by June 10the Department spent 112.7 million Rub to provide help.

● In Russia, the Russian Orthodox Church has collected, purchased and transferred more than 1,700 tons of humanitarian aid to refugees and affected civilians, of which more than 1,100 tons were sent to Donetsk, Lugansk, Gorlovka, Severodonetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporozhye, Berdyansk dioceses.

● By May 31, a total of 347 tons of humanitarian aid had been sent from the Moscow Church Collection Center, organized by the Synodal Department for Charity, to refugees in Moscow, in border dioceses and civilians in the conflict zone. By June 10, 385 tons were sent.

● By June 10, refugees have been accommodated in 52 church related institutions in Russia, Germany and Ukraine.

● In May, 4,390 prs. applied to the church center of targeted assistance to refugees in Moscow. By June 10, 8,770 people had applied for assistance.

● By May 31, 4,625 refugee families had applied for help to the humanitarian center of the Rostov-on-Don diocese. By June 10 – over 5,500 refugee families.

● Every day, Orthodox volunteers of Ukrainian dioceses distribute food to about 6 thousand people, more than 2 thousand people receive humanitarian aid daily. In total, by May 31 about 1.5 thousand tons of humanitarian aid was distributed to the affected civilians in Ukraine.

Assistance to the wounded, medical care

● 5 volunteer doctors from the St. Alexy Church Hospital provide assistance to the residents of Mariupol: on the left bank of the city, 3 doctors conduct outpatient appointments and go on house calls, on the right bank, 2 surgeons of the church hospital operate in the city hospital #2 of Mariupol.

Orthodox volunteers help the wounded in hospitals in Moscow, Odintsovo, Moscow region, in the military hospital of Rostov-on-Don and in the Novoazovskaya Central District Hospital.

● From March 5 to May 31, 252 refugees applied to St. Alexy Hospital for help (152 prs. in May), 326 outpatient consultations and 112 instrumental diagnostics were conducted, 58 patients underwent laboratory tests, 12 patients underwent inpatient treatment and have already been discharged. 13 patients were taken from Mariupol to St. Alexy Hospital in Moscow.

● By June 8, 1,048 applications have been submitted for courses on care for the wounded, organized by the St. Alexy Hospital Training Center and the Synodal Department for Charity, and 167 prs. have been trained. 152 people graduated from the courses.

Accommodation of refugees in church related institutions and with the support of the Church

● By May 31, in Russia, refugees are housed in a church shelter in the village of Manychskaya, a shelter in the Voronezh diocese, the Iverskaya Mother of God Icon Convent of the Rostov Diocese, the Staritsky Dormition Monastery of the Tver Diocese, the Mary and Martha Convent in Belgorod Diocese, the diocesan Mother and Child Center in Belgorod, and the diocesan shelter in Stavropol. Also, with the support of the Church, refugees are housed in Novocherkassk of the Rostov diocese. A refugees family was received by the Kovalevsky orphanage in the Kostroma diocese. Children go to kindergartens and schools.

● Refugees and people in need of help were accommodated by the Svyatogorskaya Lavra of the Donetsk Diocese, the St. John the Baptist Monastery of the Lugansk Diocese in Chuginka, the Sergievsky Convent of the Gorlovka Diocese in Sergeyevka, the Holy Trinity Brailovsky Convent, the St. John the Theologian Monastery and the Holy Cross Church of the Vinnytsia Diocese, the Trinity Cathedral and the Assumption Yelets Monastery of the Chernigov Diocese, Galaykovsky Holy Transfiguration Monastery of Mogilev-Podolsk Diocese, Banchensky Monastery of Chernivtsi-Bukovina Diocese, Cyril and Methodius Svalyavsky, Nikolaevsky, Pokrovsky Rakoshinsky and Dormition Dombok monasteries of the Mukachevo diocese, Holy Dormition Pochaev Lavra, Olshansky Convent and Neshcherovsky Holy Transfiguration Monastery of the Kiev diocese, the Church of St Tatiana in the village of Vygoda and St. Nicholas Church of the Odessa diocese, the Archangel Michael Monastery and St. Panteleimon Monastery in the Odessa diocese, St. Elizabeth Monastery and the Holy Dormition Church of the Kirovograd diocese, Gorodok, Dermansky, Belovsky and Goshchansky monasteries of the Rivne diocese, Kiev Caves Lavra, Holy Intercession Goloseevskaya Monastery, Holy Vvedensky Monastery, Archangel Michael Monastery, St. Panteleimon Monastery in Kiev, Kiev Theological Academy and Seminary, Holy Annunciation Church of Krasnograd, St. Vladimis Church of Kharkov, Holy Spirit Church of Bogodukhov of Kharkiv Diocese, Poltava Missionary Theological Seminary, Holy Intercession Church in Dnipro Svyatogorsky Zimnensky Convent of the Vladimir-Volyn diocese.

● In the Berlin and Germany Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, refugees were accommodated in St. George Monastery in Gotschendorf, in the Znamensky Church in Ulm, in the Hamburg parish house, in the parish house of the Holy Trinity Church of Dortmund.

Humanitarian aid

· The Belgorod Diocese has sent over 110 tons of humanitarian aid to Kharkiv Diocese.

· The Synodal Department for Charity purchased and sent 20 tons of humanitarian aid to Rostov diocese, 20 tons of humanitarian aid to Belgorod diocese and 18 tons to Lugansk diocese. The Luhansk Diocese regularly transports food and hygiene items to villages and towns in the conflict zone.

· The Simferopol Diocese has sent 80 tons of humanitarian aid to neighboring dioceses.

· Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk took part in the evacuation of civilians from the territory of the Mariupol Azovstal plant.

· For the Gorlovka Diocese, the Synodal Department for Charity purchased a GAZ Sadko car for the delivery of humanitarian aid.

· In Nikolaev, near the Cathedral of the Nativity of Mother of God, 1000 loaves of bread and Easter cakes baked in the Iversky and Ilyinsky monasteries of Odessa were distributed. Orthodox youth of Transcarpathia handed over Easter cakes and food packages to more than 1,000 refugees.

· In Kharkiv, priests and volunteers regularly send humanitarian aid to residents of the Kharkiv districts of Saltovka, Horizon and Solnechny, to hospitals and refugees in the Kharkiv region.

· The Zverinetsky Monastery in Kiev sends bread every week for refugees and elderly people in Kiev.

· Orthodox volunteers of the Voronezh Diocese handed over 9 tons of humanitarian aid to the affected civilians in the conflict zone.

· The Vinnytsia, Ternopil and Chernivtsi-Bukovina dioceses sent 29 tons of humanitarian aid to the residents of Kharkiv in May.

· St. Klimentovsky Inkerman Monastery in Crimea has sent more than 5.5 tons of humanitarian aid to refugees.

· A refugee assistance center was opened at the St Onufriy Tikhvin Church in Voronezh in May. Up to 150 prs. daily apply here for help.

· The Synodal Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Social and Humanitarian Issues has sent 18 tons of humanitarian aid to the Chernihiv diocese.

· The Kiev charitable Foundation "Favor" donated humanitarian aid for 1800 refugees in the Kamensk diocese.

· In May, the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolia sent 37.5 tons of humanitarian aid to Donbass, this being their fourth humanitarian shipment.

· More than 1,000 humanitarian kits for residents of Gorlovka were sent from the Kharlampiev Church in Irkutsk.

· About 7 tons of humanitarian aid were sent from the Volyn diocese to residents of the Sumy region.

· In the soup kitchen at the church of the Kaspersky Icon of the Mother of God in Kherson, about 200 needy civilians receive hot meals daily.

Spiritual help

· Priests of Khabarovsk, Volgograd, Tula, Nizhny Novgorod, Belevsk, Kaluga, Borisoglebsk, Belgorod, Tver, Tambov, Voronezh, Moscow, Ufa, Balakovo, Lipetsk and other dioceses visited the TACs, performed prayer services and memorial services, held spiritual conversations with refugees.

· The dioceses of Vyksa, Cheboksary, Kaluga, Kazan and Ryazan organized pilgrimage trips for refugees.

Targeted assistance

· Priests, sisters of mercy and volunteers in Rostov-on-Don, Volgodonsk, Moscow, Kurgan, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula, Omsk, Nizhny Tagil, Yekaterinburg, Cheboksary, Borisoglebsk, Troitsk, Vyazma, Khabarovsk, Tver, Yeisk, Otradnensk, Simbirsk, Gatchina, Vyksa, Yakutsk, Vladikavkaz, Saratov, Voronezh, Kaluga, Vyatka, Penza, Simferopol, Lugansk, Odessa and Sumy dioceses provided targeted food and clothing assistance to refugees, assisted in issuing documents, delivered refugees to hospitals and social institutions, bought medicines, furniture and necessary household items for refugees, paid for tickets to return home, helped with accommodation.
