Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk takes part in the next stage of evacuation of civilians from Azovstal

On May 6, 2022, fifty-one civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, Patriarchia.ru reports with reference to TASS. The evacuated people were handed over to representatives of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross and departed for selected accommodation sites.
With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk took part in the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal on April 30 and May 1, when 101 people were rescued, as well as on May 6.
Metropolitan Mitrofan was one of the first to meet the rescued people. In his interview to Patriarchia.ru he described the process of evacuation and the feelings of the recued, saying: “Many people, including negotiators, servicemen, medical doctors and other professionals, have been involved in the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steelworks. The regime of silence was observed literally in manual mode, so that nothing would have fired and the process would keep going.”
The hierarch expressed his gratitude to His Holiness the Patriarch, “who took the situation very much to heart and has done everything in his power to hasten the rescue of civilians from the Mariupol underground.”
Mr. Vladimir R. Legoida, chairman of the Synodal department for the Church’s relations with society and mass media and acting head of the Press Service of the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, said that the Church would continue its active participation in humanitarian actions in the region.
