His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia meets with Iranian Ambassador to Russia

DECR Communication Service, 12.04.22.

On April 12, 2022, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with H.E. Kazem Jalali, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Russian Federation. The meeting took place at the Patriarchal residence in St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow.

Taking part in the meeting were also Archimandrite Philaret (Bulekov), vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations from the Russian Orthodox Church, and Counselor Masoud Ahmadvand from the Embassy of Iran.

While greeting the guests, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasized that the people of Iran and Russia had got along very well, and that these good relations have been actively developing during last decades.

“I would like to remember people who had actively promoted development of these relations, and, first of all, my friend Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Taskhri, with whom we stood at the start of these relations and organized many joint events. The most important thing is that during discussions we found out the coincidence of our views on very important issues, both religious and moral and those on modern political agenda,” Patriarch Kirill noted.

His Holiness shared reminiscences of his visit to Iran in 1995, saying, “I visited Tehran and other places, got acquainted with religious life of your people and my feeling of sympathy to your people, your culture and your history has become even deeper.”

His Holiness said that the 12th meeting of the Joint Russian-Islamic Commission for ‘Orthodoxy-Islam’ Dialogue, which had to take place in 2020, but was postponed because of the pandemic, is planned to be held this year. “2022 is a jubilee year that marks the 25th anniversary of our first meeting in Tehran,” His Holiness pointed out.

Patriarch Kirill added that Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan was appointed co-chairman of the Commission to replace the unexpectedly died Metropolitan Feofan (Ashurkov).

“Recently, Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Mehdi Imanipour has been selected as head of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization. He used to work in Moscow and knows Russia. We note his appointment with deep satisfaction and believe that he would do anything he considers possible and necessary for promoting our relationship,” the Primate of the Russian Church hopes.

The Iran’s Ambassador thanked Patriarch Kirill for support of and regular friendly dialogue with the Islamic community in Russia and pointed out the leading role of the Russian Orthodox Church in maintaining interreligious peace in Russia.

“As You have noted in your address, the Russian people and people of Iran have a lot in common. Certainly, with the strengthening of dialogue and relations between them and between our governments in various spheres we will be able to promote the development of our bilateral relations,” Ambassador Jalali said.

He underscored the importance of interreligious harmony and further development of interethnic relations and highly appreciated the work of the Joint Russian-Iranian Commission for ‘Orthodoxy-Islam’ dialogue.

“We welcome the holding of the 12th meeting of the Commission this year and will try to make good plans for it with your assistance,” said Ambassador Kazem Jalali.
