Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk begins his working trip to the USA

On November 10, 2021, with a blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and at the invitation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada, chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Russian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk arrived for a working visit to the United States of America.

At John Kennedy Airport, the DECR chairman was met by Archpriest Alexander Rentel, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America, Hegumen Nikodim (Balyasnikov) and Rev. Mark Rashkov, clerics of the St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral, and Mr. S. K. Ovsyannikov, Russian Federation Consul General in New York.

In the morning of November 11, Metropolitan Hilarion met with the founder and president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, Rabbi Arthur Schneier. Founded in 1965 with the aim to develop dialogue and good relations between traditional world religions, the foundation is one of the most popular and influential interreligious organizations in the USA.

They discussed a wide range of issues of mutual concern. Metropolitan Hilarion spoke in particular about how the Russian Orthodox Church is carrying out her service in the situation of restrictions caused by the coronavirus infection pandemic and about the present state of inter-Orthodox relations.

On the same day, Metropolitan Hilarion came to St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary for an academic-theological conference “Study Scriptures” devoted to the English translation of Metropolitan Hilarion’s six-volume work entitled “Jesus Christ. The Life and Teaching”. As of now, four volumes out of six have come out. Leading American scholars working in New Testament studies have gathered to discuss issues dealt with in the work. Metropolitan Hilarion will present to the conference the key paper.

The program of the DECR chairman’s trip to the USA includes the celebration of the Liturgy at the church of St. Vladimir’s Seminary, a visit to the St. Tikhon Seminary in Pennsylvania and the co-celebration of the Divine Liturgy with His Beatitude Tikhon, Metropolitan of All America and Canada, meetings with the Primate and hierarchs of the Orthodox Church in America and with representatives of other Christian confessions.
