Archbishop Leonid of Vladikavkaz and Alania
He was born on 26 October 1968 in Stavropol. In 1970 his family moved to Krasnodar. In 1985-1986 he worked as laboratory assistant at the chair of flight aerodynamics and dynamics at the AAS troop unit 26265. At the same time, he served as sexton at the church of St. George in Krasnodar. From 1986 to 1988, he served in the Armed Forces.
In 1988-1989, he worked as reader and singer at the St. George church in Krasnodar and was a sub-deacon to Archbishop Isidor of Yekaterinodar and Kuban.
In 1990, he was ordained as deacon. On June 18, 1990, he was tonsured by Archbishop Isidor and on October 8, he was ordained as hierodeacon.
From 1990 to 1997, he served on the clergy staff of the St. Catherine Cathedral in Krasnodar. From 1995 to 1997, he was the sacristan of the cathedral and exercised pastoral care for inmates of high-security Corrective Labour Colony 17 in Krasnodar and as well as for the Romashka children’s prophylactic center and the municipal veterans’ home.
In 1997, he was transferred to Moscow to serve on the staff of the Synodal Department for Cooperation with the Army and Law-Enforcement.
From March to September 1998, he was on an assignment to the Detached Brigade of the Limited Contingent of Peace Forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From 1998 to 2002, during his studies at the Department of Theology of the State University of Athens, he was an out-of-staff cleric of the Russian lower church of Great Martyr Panteleimon on Acharnon, Athens, Greece.
From May 2003 to December 2004, worked on the staff of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem.
By the Holy Synod’s decision made in December 2004, he was appointed as representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia to the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. During his representation service, he made mission trips to Ethiopia, Kenia, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, and Greece.
On April 11, 2010, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite by His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, at the Moscow Patriarchate representation in Cairo.
By the Holy Synod’s decision of 20 May 2013, he was elected as Bishop of Argentine and South America. His episcopal nomination took place on June 11 at the church of All Saints Who Shone Forth in the Russian Land. His episcopal consecration took place on June 17, during the Divine Liturgy at the church of Holy Prince Igor of Chernigov at Peredelkino near Moscow. The liturgy was led by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill.
On July 16, 2013, he was dismissed as Representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia to the Patriarch of Alexandria.
By the Holy Synod decision of June 3, 2016, he was appointed as Bishop of Vladikavkaz and Alania.
On December 27, 2016, the Holy Synod appointed Bishop Leonid as administrator of the Patriarchate Deanery of the Russian Orthodox Church Parishes in Armenia while remaining in charge of the Diocese of Vladikavkaz.
On July 29, 2017, the Synod approved his appointment as Archimandrite of the Alanian Monastery of the Dormition at the Khidikus settlement, Alaghir region, Republic of North Ossetia - Alania.
On December 4, 2017, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill during the Liturgy at the Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
By the Holy Synod decision of October 17, 2019, he was appointed deputy head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate while remaining the ruling bishop of the diocese of Vladikavkaz.
He is a co-chairman of the Working Group for Coordination of Bilateral Relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church (since 2019).
He is also a co-chairman of the Commission for Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Church (since 2020).
