Archbishop Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, visited the Stavrovouni Monastery of the Honorable and Life-giving Cross of Our Lord, the oldest monastery in Cyprus founded in the 4th century by the Holy Queen Helen Equal-to-the-Apostles.
On 22 October 2009, the Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department Archbishop Hilarion of Volokolamsk met with His Beatitude Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Nea Justiniana and All Cyprus. Taking part in the meeting that took place in Paphos, Cyprus, was Metropolitan Isaiah (Kykkotis) of Tamassos.
He venerated the monastery’s main shrine – the miracle-working Icon of Our Lady of Kykka, saw the monastery’s churches and museum of church archeology and shared a meal with representatives of the monastic community.

Displayed are Metropolitan Nikodim’s vestments, belongings, photographs and the first editions of his works. Another part of the exhibition highlights the work of Patriarch Kirill when he was rector of the Academy.
The participants will discuss the document on the role of the Pope of Rome in the first millennium prepared by the Joint Commission Coordinating Committee in October 2008. The Russian Orthodox Church presented its critical remarks to the Organizing Committee before the session.
Archbishop Hilarion noted that those present at the meetings had no differences on such vital issues as the immutability of the norms of Christian morality and the significance of Christian values in the history of European culture.
In the beginning of the meeting which took place at the Academy’s assembly hall, His Eminence Hilarion was welcomed by the rector of the theological schools, Bishop Ambrose of Gatchina.
Before the session, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church welcomed the meeting, noting that it was a second Holy Synod session to be held in the historic building of the Sacred Governing Synod and that St. Petersburg assumed the duties of the Synodal capital.
