The Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople has stated its intention to discuss with all the Local Orthodox Churches the appeal made to it by Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko to create an autocephalous Church in Ukraine.
Patriarch Kirill underscored the significance of the contribution made by Patriarch Irenaeus and the whole Serbian Church to the unity of Orthodoxy, saying, ‘We will honour you as a prize-winner, and on the eve of this event I would like to meet you to exchange opinions concerning some important matters’.
The participants in the meeting discussed various issues pertaining to the life of the Japanese Orthodox Church.
After the Liturgy Bishop Nestor warmly greeted Metropolitan Hilarion, wishing him God’s help in his important ministry as the DECR chairman.
Various issues pertaining to bilateral cooperation, pan-Orthodox agenda and inter-confessional relations were discussed.
On 17 May 2018, the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, after the Divine Liturgy His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia met with the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, His Holiness Patriarch and Catholicos Abune Mathias I.
They discussed students’ exchange between educational institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church and Greek universities, as well as other topics of mutual concern.
On 15 May 2018, Patriarch and Catholicos Abune Mathias I of Ethiopia arrived in Russia with an official visit at the invitation of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
In April 2018, the Ukrainian Supreme Rada supported the initiative of the President of Ukraine P. A. Poroshenko to appeal to the Patriarch of Constantinople to establish an autocephalous Church in Ukraine.
The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has begun its session at the historic building of the Sacred Governing Synod in St. Petersburg. It is chaired by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
