The 7th Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA held in Detroit
The 7th Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America was held from October 4 to 6, 2016, in Detroit, Michigan. It was attended by 41 hierarchs out of 50 bishops who carry out their archpastoral ministry in this region and represent the Patriarchates of Constantinople, Antioch, Moscow, Georgia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, as well as the Orthodox Church in America.
During the sessions, reports were made by representatives of agencies officially affiliated with the Assembly and chairmen of its standing committees. Among the speakers were invited specialists who presented a series of reports on such points as religious freedom in the USA, religions in the mass media and prospects for religious freedoms in the global aspect.
The Assembly elected a new secretary and a treasurer in place of those whose terms of service expired this year.
The Russian Orthodox Church was represented at the Assembly by Bishop John of Naro-Fominsk, administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, who presented during the discussion the stand adopted by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church at its meeting on July 15, 2016, with regard to the Council that took place in June 2016 in Crete.
Participating in the work of the Assembly were also hierarchs of the Russian Church Outside Russia led by its First Hierarch Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, the site of the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA reports.
