Church’s involvement in combating HIV/AIDS to be discussed at International Christmas Readings
On 22 January 2015, a round table on The Russian Orthodox Church’s Involvement in Preventing and Combating HIV/AIDS will be held within the framework of the 23rd International Christmas Readings.
The participants in the meeting, which will take place at the Department for External Church Relations, will discuss the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia and other countries and share their experience of cooperation between governmental and religious organizations in fighting against the epidemic. Also discussed will be the implementation of programmes for preventing risk behavior and HIV infection among children and youth, as well as the work of sisters of charity and volunteers who take palliative care of the AIDS patients.
The section will be chaired by archpriest Maksim Pletnev, head of the Coordination Centre for Fighting Against Drug and Alcohol Addiction of the Department for Church Charity and Social Ministry of the St. Petersburg diocese. Taking part in the meeting will be representatives of various dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, who work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and of other religious communities, as well as staff members of governmental, international, and non-governmental organizations.
The round table will be held from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m.
