Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church officiates at Divine Liturgy in the Dormition Cathedral of the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius on St. Sergius’ Commemoration Day

On 8 October 2011, the commemoration day of the demise of St. Sergius, Hegumen of Radonezh and Wonderworker of All Russia (+1392), His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius together with the assembly of bishops.
Divine services were celebrated in other churches of the Laura by Metropolitans Varsonofiy of Saransk and Mordovia, chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate; Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna; Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Onufriy of Chernovtsy and Bukovina; Valentin of Orenburg and Saraktash; and Archbishop Aristarkh of Gomel and Zhlobin.
His Holiness elevated some hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church to the rank of metropolitan.
Attending the service were Alexander Beglov, deputy head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation; Igor Levitin, Russian minister of transport; and other state and regional officials.
The combined choir of the Laura and the Moscow Theological Academy under archimandrite Gleb (Kozhevnikov) sang at the Liturgy, after which Patriarch Kirill and all archpastors went on a procession with the cross to the square and celebrated a prayer service to St. Sergius of Radonezh.
His Holiness addressed his primatial homily to the participants in the celebration from the balcony of his chambers.
