Russian Ambassador to Italy meets with the rector of St. Catherine’s church
On 5 August 2011, H.T. Alexei Menshikov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Italian Republic, met with hieromonk Antoniy (Sevryuk), rector of the Church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr in Rome and secretary of the Administration of the Moscow Patriarchate’s parishes in Italy.
Discussed were current problems of cooperation between St. Catherine’s church built in the territory of the Russian Ambassador’s residence (Villa Abamelek) and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Italy, website of St. Catherine’s church reports.
In 2001, a plot of land was allotted for construction of the church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr in the territory of the Russian ‘Abamelek’ Embassy Villa that belonged to Duke S. Abamelek-Lazarev before the Revolution. Construction works began in 2003. On 19 May 2006, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, now His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, performed the Office of the Lesser Blessing of the church building. Divine services have been celebrated there every Sunday since 8 October 2006. On 7 December 2007, Metropolitan Kirill consecrated the Church of Ss Constantine and Helena Equal-to-the-Apostles open in the basement of St. Catherine’s church.
